TCF332 Course Philosophies:

Attendance Policy

Class begins at 5pm. If a quiz is given at the beginning of the class, and you are late, you will not be allowed to take the quiz.

Students are expected to attend each class meeting having prepared each assignment fully. Students will be allowed one (1) unexcused absence. Excused absences are those in which documentation is given (a note from the health center, other doctor’s note, court order, traffic ticket, etc.). Twenty percent of your grade will come from participation, so absences beyond the two excused will begin to severely affect your grade.

If you have a situation in which you will miss class, it is your responsibility to make arrangements to receive any notes, instructions, or assignments. Missing class is not an excuse for not doing an assignment.

Assignment Policies

1. All assignments turned in must be typed, double-spaced, and follow the correct broadcast style format. If the assignment exceeds one page, assignments must be stapled. Any assignments that are handwritten or unstapled will NOT be accepted and a grade of 0 will be given for the assignment, no exceptions.

2. If you have to miss class the day an assignment is due, the assignment will be accepted under two conditions:

- The assignment is emailed and received by the start of class time

- The assignment is dropped off in my box in the TCF office prior to the start of class.

In the case of a true emergency, the student must contact the instructor as soon as they are able to make the instructor aware of the situation. The instructor will work with the student based on the situation and their needs.

If you miss class and no prior arrangements have been made, and the two conditions above are not met, then you will receive a 0 on the assignment, no exceptions.

Class Policies

Prerequisites: Any student that does not meet the prerequisites or does not attend the first two (2) class meetings will be administratively disenrolled. Students must have completed TCF100 and have an overall GPA of 2.0 to enroll in the class.

Minimal Grade: Students must earn a “C” or better in all required and elective courses in the major. A “C” or better is required in all external courses required by the major whether they serve as a prerequisite to a major course or are simply required by the major.

Code of Academic Conduct: All students in attendance at the University of Alabama are expected to be honorable and observe standards of conduct appropriate to a community of scholars. The University expects from its students a higher standard of conduct than the minimum required to avoid discipline. Academic misconduct includes all acts of dishonesty in any academically related matter and any knowing, intentional helping, attempt/conspiracy to help another student. Academic dishonestly will NOT be tolerated.

Classroom Decorum: The Code of Student Conduct requires that students behave in a manner that is conducive to a teaching/learning environment. Students who engage in behavior that is disruptive or obstructive to the teaching/learning environment will be subject to disciplinary sanctions outlined by the Code of Student Conduct. Disruptive/obstructive behavior is not limited to but may include the following: physical abuse, verbal abuse, threats, stalking, intimidation harassment, hazing, possession of controlled substances/alcoholic beverages. Additionally, text messaging, reading the newspaper, using a laptop for personal reason, or other behaviors as determined by the instructor to be disruptive during class time are all grounds for you to be dismissed from class that day and lose any participation credit.

Diversity and Disability: This course encourages different perspectives related to such factors as gender, race, nationality, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, and other relevant cultural identities. As a news professional, you must foster understanding and inclusiveness related to such diverse perspectives and ways of communicating. Any intolerance shown toward any of these groups will be grounds for dismissal from the class. Additionally, the University will accommodate any students with physical and/or learning disabilities. If you have any special needs, please meet with the instructor privately outside of class. If you feel that you need additional help or a referral to any organizations/services on campus that meet your need, the instructor will provide a referral. -->
